The current situation is bad because many wallets (most that i used) want good user experience and thus chose a fee for them that puts it at the top of the mempool priority queue. If the mempool is bigger than 1 MB, that means they are constantly outcompeting each other. 22:05 < wallet42> My simple fix would be (by default) use an opt-in RBF. Look at the mean feerate (sat/byte) in the mempool. Substract 1 sat/byte. Use that fee. If the user then complaints, offer him to increase fee via RBF after 1 hour no confirmation. 22:05 < wallet42> Now there is a drag down instead of drag up in terms of average/mean feerate. 22:07 -!- Matviy [49dff905@gateway/web/freenode/ip.73.223.249.5] has joined #bitcoin-core-dev 22:09 < sipa> wallet42: i don't think average necessarily means anything 22:09 < sipa> anyone can create a near infinite amount of transactions of low fee 22:11 -!- Alina-malina [~Alina-mal@37.157.223.81] has joined #bitcoin-core-dev 22:20 -!- treebeardd [~treebeard@73.109.61.86] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 22:24 -!- Alina-malina [~Alina-mal@37.157.223.81] has quit [Changing host] 22:24 -!- Alina-malina [~Alina-mal@unaffiliated/alina-malina] has joined #bitcoin-core-dev 22:25 -!- luke-jr [~luke-jr@unaffiliated/luke-jr] has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds] 22:28 -!- delinquentme [~delinquen@108-235-112-153.lightspeed.sntcca.sbcglobal.net] has joined #bitcoin-core-dev 22:29 -!- luke-jr [~luke-jr@unaffiliated/luke-jr] has joined #bitcoin-core-dev 22:38 < bitcoin-git> [bitcoin] AkioNak opened pull request #11173: RPC: Fix currency unit string in the help text (master...use_currency_unit_constant) https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/11173 23:01 -!- luke-jr [~luke-jr@unaffiliated/luke-jr] has quit [Ping timeout: 255 seconds] 23:02 -!- luke-jr [~luke-jr@unaffiliated/luke-jr] has joined #bitcoin-core-dev 23:03 -!- dgenr8 [~dgenr8@unaffiliated/dgenr8] has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds] 23:03 -!- dgenr8 [~dgenr8@unaffiliated/dgenr8] has joined #bitcoin-core-dev 23:04 -!- gitju_ [~gitju@5.230.145.49] has joined #bitcoin-core-dev 23:05 -!- gitju [~gitju@x4e346e78.dyn.telefonica.de] has quit [Ping timeout: 248 seconds] 23:06 -!- gitju_ [~gitju@5.230.145.49] has quit [Client Quit] 23:07 -!- gitju [~gitju@5.230.145.49] has joined #bitcoin-core-dev 23:07 -!- paveljanik [~paveljani@unaffiliated/paveljanik] has quit [Quit: Leaving] 23:11 -!- luke-jr [~luke-jr@unaffiliated/luke-jr] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer] 23:14 -!- shesek [~shesek@unaffiliated/shesek] has quit [Quit: Leaving] 23:15 -!- shesek [~shesek@bzq-84-110-234-120.red.bezeqint.net] has joined #bitcoin-core-dev 23:15 -!- shesek [~shesek@bzq-84-110-234-120.red.bezeqint.net] has quit [Changing host] 23:15 -!- shesek [~shesek@unaffiliated/shesek] has joined #bitcoin-core-dev 23:16 -!- shesek [~shesek@unaffiliated/shesek] has quit [Client Quit] 23:19 -!- shesek [~shesek@bzq-84-110-234-120.red.bezeqint.net] has joined #bitcoin-core-dev 23:19 -!- shesek [~shesek@bzq-84-110-234-120.red.bezeqint.net] has quit [Changing host] 23:19 -!- shesek [~shesek@unaffiliated/shesek] has joined #bitcoin-core-dev 23:23 -!- RubenSomsen [~RubenSoms@1.217.138.142] has joined #bitcoin-core-dev 23:25 -!- RubenSomsen [~RubenSoms@1.217.138.142] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 23:25 -!- RubenSomsen [~RubenSoms@1.217.138.142] has joined #bitcoin-core-dev 23:31 -!- RubenSomsen [~RubenSoms@1.217.138.142] has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds] 23:33 -!- webuser322 [5ec579bd@gateway/web/freenode/ip.94.197.121.189] has joined #bitcoin-core-dev 23:34 < webuser322> just a reminded, someone please remove https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/10821/commits/6b8d872e5e2dd68a5229ec55f5261dae34ff9bdb so SSE4 optimized SHA256 begins being tested/used by default 23:36 < gmaxwell> webuser322: thanks. 23:37 < webuser322> np, and the segwit settings faq/guide for miners... the things one think first in the morning ;) 23:40 < webuser322> \quit have a good day core! 23:40 -!- webuser322 [5ec579bd@gateway/web/freenode/ip.94.197.121.189] has quit [Quit: have a good day core] 23:43 -!- gagvd [~androirc@36.83.129.177] has joined #bitcoin-core-dev 23:44 -!- gagvd is now known as wall__ 23:52 -!- BashCo_ [~BashCo@unaffiliated/bashco] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 23:52 -!- BashCo [~BashCo@unaffiliated/bashco] has joined #bitcoin-core-dev 23:53 < gmaxwell> mental note: we need release notes on the topup stuff and instructions for rescanning 23:54 -!- luke-jr [~luke-jr@unaffiliated/luke-jr] has joined #bitcoin-core-dev 23:56 -!- RubenSomsen [~RubenSoms@1.217.138.142] has joined #bitcoin-core-dev 23:56 -!- BashCo [~BashCo@unaffiliated/bashco] has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds] 23:58 < kallewoof> After seeing a bunch of complaints about fee estimation on Bitcoin Core I decided to do some profiling on how well the estimator is doing. My approach may be off, but it seems to be overshooting by a ton. 23:59 -!- delinquentme [~delinquen@108-235-112-153.lightspeed.sntcca.sbcglobal.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds] 23:59 < kallewoof> Approach: every 100 txs that go into mempool, do an estimateSmartFee for 1..10 blocks for conservative and the same for non-conservative, and store that. For every new block, iterate over all stored estimations and increment blocks waited, and check if the fee per kb for each tx is greater than the lowest 10 fee transactions in the block. If it is, count it as "would have gone into the block".
