I had shared the rough concept a few months ago but now you can see what it looks like in action. 06:11 < fjahr> The tools used are Kartograf (https://github.com/fjahr/kartograf) and sipa’s asmap-tool (https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/28793), the repository for the actual data is at https://github.com/fjahr/asmap-data for now, this should probably move into the org at some point if people are happy with this process. 06:11 < fjahr> Step 1: Data collection, demoed here: https://github.com/fjahr/asmap-data/issues/9 Multiple contributors first agree to launch the Kartograf mapping process at a specific timestamp, coordinated via an issue. Kartograf now has a feature that makes this comfortable (`-wait`), you just set it and it launches the process when the timestamp is hit. In testing so far we have found that there is a good chance that within a group 06:11 < fjahr> of 5 or more the majority of participants will have the same result. That is the threshold I am proposing as well for the start: 5+ participants and >50% match in result. This will not work every time but maybe 4/5 and we can simply have a redo when there is a failure to agree on a result. We can also adjust the values over time as we get more practice. This process can be initiated by anyone, very similar to a Core PR. 06:11 < fjahr> Participants that have a matching result could be interpreted as ACKs. If anyone sees something weird in the result or they simply didn’t get a match, they can ask for the raw data to be shared to investigate further. 06:11 < fjahr> Step 2: Compression, demoed here: https://github.com/fjahr/asmap-data/pull/10 Based on the result file a PR can be created that adds the compressed asmap.dat of the previous result to the repo. Similar to our normal PRs, 2-3 reviewers should ensure they get the same result before the file gets merged. 06:11 < fjahr> Step 3: Using the asmap.dat files: Users that want to run their node with an asmap file can get regular updates from there. When we decide to include a default asmap.dat file in a release, we can pick one of the recent ones from the repo. 06:12 < fjahr> Many thanks to those who participated in all those tests so far! Happy to answer questions :) 06:12 < fjahr> (now or later) 06:13 < achow101> cool, thanks for the update 06:14 < achow101> #topic mailing list archive progress (kanzure) 06:14 < kanzure> we have the .mbox files and such, but the announcement email is waiting on a mailing list archive 06:15 < achow101> I thought the idea was to use public-inbox? 06:15 < kanzure> which i am actively working on-- public-inbox.org default import order is somewhat random and the publicly accessible archive does not look good 06:15 < kanzure> yes, but mb2md produces a random order when converted to public-inbox.org's git repository 06:15 < kanzure> so anyway, i need to make a commit order that looks reasonable based on the emails in the mbox file 06:15 < kanzure> working on it! 06:15 < achow101> how long will the archive on linuxfoundation.org be live? 06:15 < kanzure> i don't think they will host our new archive :| 06:15 < kanzure> we can ask 06:16 -!- enyc [~enyc@user/enyc] has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds] 06:16 < kanzure> here is a public-inbox.org demo instance: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/ 06:17 < achow101> didn't _aj_ have a public-inbox demo for the list? 06:17 < kanzure> random order: https://gnusha.org/inboxes/bitcoindev/new.html anyway, actively working on it. And for more active contributors to ACK it. 06:28 < cguida> Ok, thanks. Can you suggest a threshold for maximum number of NACKs? I just think that it's an important issue that should be addressed somehow, and sooner rather than later. I'm concerned that bitcoin core has been emphasizing speaking for the miner community recently, and that users and holders are in danger of losing their voice in the development process. Bitcoin Core's voice carries gravitas in the bitcoin community, but it risks losing this influence if it stops 06:39 < cguida> representing the interests of the users and holders, as the only other way they can voice their interests, besides through the Core dev process, is through forks and alternative clients. 06:40 < instagibbs> there's a switch, you can wear hats to encourage people to turn it off, right? 06:41 < instagibbs> PR is a question of default, anyone who would run a fork could much easier update their config, imo 06:42 < kanzure> there's a switch already? 06:43 < instagibbs> -permitbaremultisig or am I think 06:43 < instagibbs> ing of wrong idea 06:44 < cguida> instagibbs: yes, but it only works if miners turn it off, and miners can't be expected to do this without support from the user community, since they would be leaving fees on the table for other mining pools to collect. The only way we can help the miners coordinate around a potential reduction in short-term profits is if they can have assurances that this is really what the user community wants and that other miners will 06:44 < cguida> *simultaneously* follow suit. And the only way users can voice their support at the moment is through core's default policy. 06:44 < instagibbs> that's not a dev problem, sorry 06:45 < cguida> instagibbs: who represents the users, if not the devs? 06:46 < kanzure> wouldn't it be easier for those users to pay higher fees? i don't understand. 06:51 < cguida> kanzure: The PR above is to fix a vulnerability whereby the utxoset is being unnecessarily bloated, in order to cater to second-layer token protocols. If we can't come together as a user community to say "leaving -permitbaremultisig on is a bad idea and should be discouraged", then I'm worried about what might happen when there's a real attack. The utxoset has already doubled in the past year from 5GB to 10GB. The cap is 06:51 < cguida> 1MB/block, or around ~40GB/year. Low-resource nodes are already struggling to IBD, and many forms of hardware have already been permanently excluded from the list of devices that can sync the blockchain in a reasonable amount of time. 06:53 < cguida> The fees are a secondary concern, though also important. 07:04 -!- cguida [~cguida@2806:2f0:55e1:f7b9:bac1:45df:caf:3f2f] has quit [Quit: Leaving] 07:04 -!- cguida_
