I was *wrong* in thinking that they work by babinet's principle; that the slot is working as it's equivalent mirror image conductor in free space. Instead what matters is the capacitance across the slot. So by scaling slot size up when trying to lower target freq I had been reducing the capacitance and doing the exact wrong thing.
