I'm not quite sure it is needed though, as there's a bit of a context difference. a rock rubbing against the 10:31 < docl> coating is essentially sintering it by briefly raising temperature and pressure (as, since the rocks are cut more slowly than dirt, they become pressure points), making the coating become more like glass/rock/sintered ceramic. so there's a bit of a self healing/enhancing quality there, which you don't leveragably have in a normal rock cutting scenario. I'm also contemplating starting with a temperature 10:31 < docl> tolerant string to ensure it doesn't lose tensile strength too soon (i.e. before it becomes primarily inertial or the ceramic can handle the tensile forces). I think cotton string would carbonize and nylon would melt before much sintering happens. fiberglass is cheap though, and basalt fiber might work better. metal dust (and other materials) strategically added to the aggregate might also be useful to 10:31 < docl> increase certain properties (basalt being volcanic glass with metals and other minerals mixed in). you could also maybe create pressure points deliberately by having the string rub on a block of metal. I'm not sure if the lateral motion combined with heat/pressure tends to make fibers on the surface, but it seems reasonable long/thin structures would form more. also, the dirt doesn't stay as normal 10:31 < docl> erosion-modified soil for long but gets to be more chipped/jagged/finely powdered, similar to the dust you get from cutting rocks. and some of the effect is just going to be fine dust sticking to the surface by surface effects rather than the binder's adhesion 10:32 < docl> devil's in the details, but it seems tweakable enough to work 10:46 < docl> plausibly testable at a small scale, despite the brittleness issue (can't just feed it between 2 poles). could use back and forth sweeps or pivot around a center with the string held in a curve. maybe clamp between two rocks to see if I can get a good sinter of surface dust 10:49 < L29Ah> i think you should start with a linear saw for your prototyping 10:49 < kanzure> anyone hear from fltrz lately? 10:49 < kanzure> or hex? 11:10 -!- Malvolio [~Malvolio@idlerpg/player/Malvolio] has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds] 11:19 -!- oxphi [~oxphi@71.146.114.111] has joined #hplusroadmap 11:50 < kanzure> .tw 1457842724128833538 11:50 < saxo> Sci-Fi Author: In my book I invented the Torment Nexus as a cautionary tale // Tech Company: At long last, we have created the Torment Nexus from classic sci-fi novel Don't Create The Torment Nexus (@AlexBlechman) 12:26 -!- oxphi [~oxphi@71.146.114.111] has quit [Quit: Client closed] 13:37 -!- Malvolio [~Malvolio@idlerpg/player/Malvolio] has joined #hplusroadmap 13:42 -!- spaceangel [~spaceange@ip-78-102-216-202.bb.vodafone.cz] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 15:21 -!- Gooberpatrol66 [~Gooberpat@user/gooberpatrol66] has quit [Quit: Leaving] 16:08 -!- darsie [~darsie@84-113-55-200.cable.dynamic.surfer.at] has quit [Ping timeout: 268 seconds] 18:02 -!- Gooberpatrol66 [~Gooberpat@user/gooberpatrol66] has joined #hplusroadmap 18:40 -!- yashgaroth [~ffffffff@2601:5c4:c780:6aa0::1909] has quit [Quit: Leaving] --- Log closed Tue Sep 20 00:00:24 2022
