The speed of sound (even for hot hydrogen) prevents actually reaching orbital velocity this way, but hybridizing it with another approach lets it work. Also you can substitute 12:02 < hprmbridge> docl> magnetic interaction with a track or mechanical interaction with a rotating tether for orbital burn (which is about 90% of the energy budget). You only need 2km/s or so to get high enough to do that. A track or tether system has to replenish the lost velocity, but this can come from downmass or by repelling against Earth's magnetic field (this works slower than we need for a rocket, but fast 12:02 < hprmbridge> docl> enough for a dedicated system.) 12:03 < fenn> nmz787_: view from a satellite would probably look something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1R3dTdcpSU 12:14 < hprmbridge> nmz787> fenn oh cool! 12:14 < hprmbridge> nmz787> it happens so fast! 12:14 < hprmbridge> nmz787> it looks way faster from orbit than from ground 12:15 < fenn> that's a timelapse; it takes about 10 minutes 12:15 < hprmbridge> nmz787> oooo 12:15 < fenn> in order to see it you have to use a long duration exposure 12:16 < fenn> or use a camera with higher sensitivity eh 12:19 < fenn> this was a Nikon D5 12:19 < fenn> "Each image is a 1/5 sec exposure at f/1.4, ISO 12800, 85mm focal length.
