kanzureon a related note i just stumbled on this: "advanced space exploration program art" http://er.jsc.nasa.gov/seh/advart.html08:23
jebbaI once went to a small musem that had "art in space" with paintings by Grant Wood of astrounauts getting suited up in the 60s, Andy Warhol painting a shuttle, etc.   They had astronaut spacewalk gloves there too with a bunch of legos so you could try working with them. Was really cool.08:28

archelsDirector_X, is the RFID reader 'hackable' at all? Could you give some more info on your hardware setup?10:13
Lukas_I would love to stay and explain, but I've suddenly become very, very busy (I just wanted to see if the room was alive)10:13
Director_Xhave fun Lukas, keep me posted10:14
Jon_Dfacebook is better than IRC sometime10:15
Director_XArchels: I don't have anything set up at this point, but I know I need an rfid "on" switch...10:15
-!- Lukas_ [81317c70@gateway/web/freenode/ip.129.49.124.112] has quit [Quit: Page closed]10:16
archelsAn RFID reader is a complex integrated system. I'm sure you can get units that just trigger an on/off switch, but there's usually some room for sticking your own firmware on the transceiver, which makes it do what you want.10:16
archelsAre you looking into buying something ready-made, or perhaps a Project (note the capital)?10:18
Director_Xthis is a prototype for a project I'm doing10:18
archelsAny hardware purchased yet?10:19
Director_Xnone10:19
Director_Xthis is micro-sized stuff10:19
Director_Xjust need a cell phone/ pager motor10:20
Director_Xi just need it to turn on with an rfid, then cycle through 4 different pulses10:21
Director_Xhopefully by using additional rfid signals'10:21
-!- thesnark is now known as thesnark|afk10:22
Director_Xthen turn off with the rfid, of course10:23
archelsSounds like a job for a microcontroller (I take it using a PC is not an option).10:23
Director_Xno10:24
archelsYou may be able to find a development kit that has the hardware you need.10:24
Director_Xreally?10:24
Director_Xthe greater project can be found here: http://discuss.biohack.me/discussion/41/haptic-subdermals-with-interchangable-sensors#Item_2310:25

archelsI don't understand what the point is of implanting the vibrators when the sensors are still going to be external. Vibrator motors are pretty large, too.10:29
archelsNot to mention power-hungry. Magnetic induction would work, electromagnetic transfer... maybe.10:31
-!- Director_X [432affb1@gateway/web/freenode/ip.67.42.255.177] has joined ##hplusroadmap10:32
Director_Xyeah, I only need 15 min of on time10:32
archelsDid you see my previous two lines?10:33
Director_Xyes10:34
Director_Xthe problem is I can't find a sensor that I'd consider implanting10:34
archelsYes, so why implant at all?10:35
Director_Xultrasonic might be my first10:35
Director_Xdont get me wrong, I 'm all for im planting something down the road, when things are smaller10:36
Director_Xcell phone buzzers aren't too big10:36
archelsWell, you'll need the energy transfer mechanism as well (coil or antenna).10:38
archelsI can understand implanting a fully contained system, but if you'll still be wearing a belt or something right on top of the implants, what's the point?10:38
Director_Xright.  thats why I'm prototyping first10:39
Director_XI want to play with it before I commit to it10:39
archelsHow is prototyping going to change that? I still haven't heard your motivation for implanting the actuators rather than wearing them.10:40
Director_Xmy logic here is that I can program them to all kinds of different sensors....ultrasound, x-ray, whatever10:41
Director_Xbut I want to use the same actuators10:42
archelsSure, I understand that, and it's a cool idea. But that still doesn't preclude a wearable device with exchangable sensor module.10:42
archelsSo again: why implant?10:42
Director_Xstep one is to design the implants and tape them to my body.  step to is to experimaent with the sensors.  if I find one useful, I'll implant it10:44
Director_Xdoes that make sense?10:45
Director_Xstep to= step 210:45
archelsOkay, so the eventual goal is to implant a fully self-contained system.10:45
Director_Xsure, but I think this leaves room for multiple sensors if I choose to play with more10:46
-!- eridu [debian-tor@gateway/tor-sasl/eridu] has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]10:47
archelsWell, anyway. RFID is a term for a pretty specific system. You want something that, like RFID, uses magnetic coils to transfer power (and information), but that's all the relation it'll have to RFID.10:49
Director_Xgotcha10:49
Director_Xbluetooth?10:50
archelsNo, far too complex, and it doesn't transfer significant energy.10:50
archelsEssentially, you're on your own.10:50
Director_Xfair enough.  thanks10:51
archelsThere are some projects that do wireless energy transfer using loops, for powering microcontrollers. You could possibly adapt those.10:51
Director_Xcool.  I'll look into it10:51
