Juuldiscussions between Jake Beal (BBN laboratories) and Autodesk about their non-openness and problems with "free for academic use" licensing09:15
@kanzureheh09:15
@kanzurei think those discussions would happen better with john walker09:15
@kanzurerather than autodesk itself09:15
Juulis he still in charge?09:16
Juuldoesn't look like it09:17
Juuli'm sure he'd be an interesting guy to talk to though09:17
@kanzurehe is definitely not in charge09:18
JuulRichard Kitney now arguing that synthetic biology is possible09:18
@kanzurewhere are you?09:19
JuulSynthetic Biology Open Language workshop09:19
Juuli'm sure everyone here has heard these arguments before09:19
Juuli'm not sure why it's called a language though09:20
Juulso far it's just an XML data format09:20
Juuli don't think that will change anytime soon09:21
@kanzurelibsbml? sbol?09:22
@kanzureoh, it's probably sbol09:22
Juulsbol yeah09:23
Juulthough we've been discussing a connection to SBML09:23
@kanzurexml schema workshops... yikes09:23
Juulheh. luckily we're not talking about the xml part of it, just creating a data model.09:24

@kanzurewho else is there?09:31
@kanzurehas anyone figured out what a modern library should be? i.e. a copy of the internet archive?09:51

Juulhah, discussing whether a "change set" for a host cell is a good idea11:18
JuulI wonder if the patch utility can handle stuff that's one long line11:18

Juulkanzure, the library at my home university is just a set of desks, some with computers, all with power and internet11:56
-!- dbolser_ is now known as dbolser11:56
Juulthe few remaining books are in the basement11:56
Juulkanzure, i know the library of alexandria has done / is doing some interesting things11:57
Juullike their stone spheres that encode important human works for very long term storage11:57
@kanzurei want to go to a library and be able to request silly things like "A copy of all patents, please" and not get blank stares12:00
Juulyeah12:00
Juuli want librarians where i can walk up and say "hi! i have this idea, let me explain it to you <explains idea> do you know if anyone has done anything like that yet?"12:01
Juuli wouldn't mind a redirect to another librarian12:01
Juulgotta go, lunch!12:02

Lucas_Kanzure, are you still interested in the "transhumanist bootcamp" idea?12:06
superkuhThat last request seems a bit crazy. The amount of information that can be stored will probably always be limited by physical space (or at least surface area). Civilizations will use whatever capacity is available. Since local storage is limited by surface area, and surface area is something unlikely to be manufactured , any request for all public data will require as much surface area as the rest of the civilization devotes to it. An ind12:07
superkuhividual requesting those kinds of resources is out of order.12:07
auguranyone know of any interesting experimental computer interfaces that people have been working on lately?12:17
Lucas_there is the "eye mouse" thing12:18
augurok12:19
