kanzure"A basic principle unites all of the multipolar traps above. In some competition optimizing for X, the opportunity arises to throw some other value under the bus for improved X. Those who take it prosper. Those who don’t take it die out. Eventually, everyone’s relative status is about the same as before, but everyone’s absolute status is worse than before. The process continues until all other values that can be traded off have been – ...09:15

kanzurewtf "Unfortunately supervisor doesn't offer a way to provide a custom restart command, so doing an uninterrupted haproxy restart via supervisor isn't possible. Instead make sure you have autorestart set to unexpected (the default) rather than true (which is what I usually do) - that way if you want a clean haproxy restart you can just do it yourself at the commandline using the -sf option as normal."15:45

dingocomputers are hard15:56
dingoi think solaris SMF is best of them all15:57
dingosystemd author made a grave mistake not reviewing it before designing it15:57
caternwhat is good about SMF out of interest15:59
nmz787_iI am hating android some more today16:21
nmz787_iI really feel like they're swindling the whole world with false pretenses16:22
nmz787_ikanzure posted some good quote about how corners are cut to make some other goal work, and in 50 years all the corners will have been cut and we'll be worse off in general16:22
nmz787_ii totally feel the vibe16:22
nmz787_ianger today: sharing wifi over bluetooth isn't supported16:23

nmz787_iminor recent finding, my flashlight will stop working sometimes and the only way to get it back is to reboot my phone16:24
nmz787_inot to mention i can't use my flashlight if the battery is 'too low'16:24
nmz787_ilike what SERIOUSLY BRAINDAMAGED person added that 'feature'  (BUG)16:25
nmz787_iI was in a cave last year and would have benefitted from the extra light16:25
nmz787_ibut I couldn't use it16:25
nmz787_iI WAS IN A CAVE, THERE WAS NO SIGNAL16:25
nmz787_iBATTERY TOO LOW TO USE FLASHLIGHT, BUT YOUR CAT VIDEOS STILL PLAY16:26
dingo1. SMF did dependencies well, it would say "The apache service is online but impacted: a dependent service 'mysql' is in maitenance mode", which is useful, i could compile a "service" that says "jboss application server depends upon 'remote-mysql' service", and then make a 'remote-mysql' service that is just a looping shell script that exits 1 if some remote mysql host is offline, i had a well synchronized "data center boots up in cross-host dependency ord16:28
dingo 2. SMF commands were quick and easy, 'svcs -xv' reports very detailed reports of any issues starting services, the logfiles were very accurate, you could trust about the report of mysql dumping core, and dumping core to a nice location you could find later, when it happened, and that it came back online, along with good default "flapping" support, and 'svcs -xv' would tell you the locations of the logs, etc.16:29
dingo3. it was all code-as-configuration (in xml), with an internally compiled database (fast, like systemd wants), but you could also export any existing config back to xml, have friends like xmllint to check your work, and re-import new changes, which were logged well, and they didn't have to persist on the filesystem16:29
dingoanyway i suppose systemd does most of it in some form, i'm not yet familiar with it16:30
dingoi was just dissapointed, during the design phase, somebody asked him if he had looked at SMF and he passed it off as solaris shit that he didn't care about without even review it, theres a lot of good things to learn there16:30
dingoinstead of the command 'fdisk -a' failing, it would be like, the service 'LocalFileSystem' is in maitenance mode, all dependent (nearly eveyr one) would also be in 'degraded' mode due to the dependency, and logfile location containing the output of failing to mount a ZFS pool would be found found directly in the output of 'svcs -xv'16:32
dingoit was still a form of 'zfs mount -a' in the backend, but being tracked as a dependent service was very valuable16:32
* dingo end solaris love16:34
