00:02 < gmaxwell> sipa: saw something cute, for curves in characteristic-2 fields all points on a prime order subgroup must have the same trace as 'a' in the curve equation, so you can transmit the x-coorid with one less bit. point compression sends the trace of y (of course because all elements are QRs in char2)... so you can encode a point in exactly as many bits as the field.
