wumpusif all you need is a one-to-many broadcast mechanism, the blockchain is just a liability. makes me wonder why they didn't consider bitmessage which at least makes an attempt to flush old messages. Not that that gives any guarantee.06:27
wumpusanother thing is that it's far from stealthy, using either bitcoin or bitmessage sticks out like a sore thumb in network traffic.06:27

Eliel_if decentralized data structures become commonplace, that "sticks out like a sore thumb" argument is void.07:08
Eliel_the audit trail however is not something I'd expect botnet operators to want... although, there is some potential in it for them too. Considering many of them sell the services to others.07:10

fluffyponybut theres still the audit trail issue07:18
Eliel_there's no double spend issue in C&C for a botnet, so not much use for distributed consensus.07:19
nshthere is a kind of doublespend issue (authorities will try to steal your bots)07:20

AdrianGI have a serious question.17:08
AdrianGhow will the problem of custody ever be sold with bitcoin?17:08
AdrianGwith physical commodities, ownership = custody17:08
-!- cbeams [~cbeams@unaffiliated/cbeams] has joined #bitcoin-wizards17:09
AdrianGyou can own a private key, but such ownership does not automatically exclude the possiblity someone else might own the same key, and move your coins any second now.17:09
gmaxwellif you generated the private key, and told no one else, then you know no one else has it.17:10
gmaxwell(with exponential probability)17:10
gmaxwell(and nothing in life is certian, a meteor could hit you on the head 5 seconds from now...)17:11
lechuga_:o17:11
gmaxwell(with WAY greater likelyhood than you generating the same key as someone else, assuming you're using software which is extensively reviewed and tested and free of systematic flaws)17:11
AdrianGgmaxwell: yes, but how do i prove to others?17:12
AdrianGthat i never told anyone?17:12
gmaxwellYou don't, and doing so isn't that important-- I mean if you're going to _lie_ than you could just steal the funds yourself.17:12
lechuga_potentially dumb question but why would u want a reusable payment request17:13
AdrianGgmaxwell: why do you think its not important?17:13
gmaxwelllechuga_: because people sometimes want to make reoccuring payments to another party, or refunds, without expecting there to constantly be synchrnous realtime communication with the other party.  You might even want to pay someone you only have one way communication with (e.g. a donation).17:14
AdrianGwe have thousands of years of law decisions about custody, its a socially important concept17:14

phantomcircuiti guess the only real question for bloomfilters per block is what the parameters should be17:14
gmaxwellAdrianG: I just explained to you why it's not important.  Your custody is your claim.  You can be dishonest with that claim, but you can also take an object you physical have and give it to someone else or drop it in an incenerator.17:14
phantomcircuitpossibly they should be variable based on the number of entries/length of those entries17:15
gmaxwellphantomcircuit: well there are some oher interesting considerations. For example, it may be interesting to shard the blocks filtering, e.g. N filters for the block, and sort the txn into the shards based on common filter hits,  so as to allow people to check only part of a block.17:15
lechuga_couldn't you set expires sufficiently high and re-use away as-is?17:16
lechuga_re: payreqs17:16
phantomcircuityeah i was also thinking that maybe a very tiny filter for each txn might also make sense17:16
phantomcircuitbut that doesn't seem super practical17:16
AdrianGgmaxwell: if we can establish custody with certainty, a liar cannot assert defense that his keys were compromise17:16
AdrianGwe would know they weren't, and he is indeed lying.17:16
AdrianGcompromised*17:16
lechuga_guess you would want to sign that it is expected to be reused17:17
phantomcircuitAdrianG, you cannot prove that you did not produce a copy of the private key to a third party17:17
phantomcircuityou maybe can approximate that with hardware DRM17:17
phantomcircuitbut that would be imperfect for certain17:17
AdrianGphantomcircuit: i know, i think its a "problem" to an extent.17:17
gmaxwelllechuga_: that forces you to reuse addresses (which has risk of blocking by miners and systemic risk from creating an incentive to demand miners block things), and doesn't let you set parameters around it. Reusing an existing payment request might be dangerous, since the reciever may not retain private keys forever, or could have accounting that can't handle the unexpected payments.  So you want17:18
gmaxwellthe reciever to set what his rules are. You migth break the rules, but thats potentially equal to just dumping the coins to /dev/null. :)17:18
AdrianGin common law, fiduciary duty is rather important.17:18
-!- davejh69 [~davejh69@fence.blueteddy.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]17:18
phantomcircuitAdrianG, in practice custody of physical things has to do with socially accepted signs of custody and nothing more17:18
AdrianGwithout even being able to figure out who has custody over things, things become complicated17:18
-!- soundx [~soundx@gateway/tor-sasl/soundx] has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds]17:18
phantomcircuitthe rules are indeed very poorly defined17:18
AdrianGphantomcircuit: rules of custody?17:18
phantomcircuitAdrianG, fiduciary duty is a concept which is entirely unrelated to bitcoin17:19
phantomcircuitthat's an abstraction on top of any money system17:19
lechuga_ic so reusable payreqs are going to require some sort of pubkey derivation17:19
phantomcircuityou can utilize multisig to improve the controls in place for fiduciaries but you cannot possibly hope to encapsulate all of the rules of such into any reasonable system17:20
AdrianGphantomcircuit: yes, but physical money are a lot more workable in this case17:20
AdrianGwith bitcoin, i cannot even be 100% certain nobody stole my private key17:20
AdrianGso i cant even be 100% certain my coins are really mine.17:20
gmaxwellAdrianG: I think you're imaginging a distinction that doesn't exist.  Someone can have a physical object, and yet someone can steal a physical object. ... you can even fail to know that an object is stolen yet.  Nothing is different there, except the specific details about how you go about checking things.  To be confident of custody of a bitcoin, you move it. (thats why transfers between distrus17:20
gmaxwellting parties always move the coins).17:20
sipalechuga_: yup17:20
phantomcircuitAdrianG, counterfeit swaps are a thing that insiders actually do with cash17:20
sipalechuga_: stealth addresses, but using out of band communication rather than blockchain storage17:21
AdrianGphantomcircuit: what does that have to do with custody and fiduciary duty?17:21
lechuga_interesting17:21
AdrianGgmaxwell: so in order for me, to be 100% certain my coins are still my coins17:21
AdrianGI  must move them every now and then?17:21
phantomcircuitAdrianG, you cannot trivially prove control of cash either17:21
gmaxwelllechuga_: yea, the idea is that the payment request basically includes the relevant information to establish a novel HD-wallet chain for that request.17:21
phantomcircuitat least with bitcoin you can continuously move the funds to new addresses which have newly generated private keys17:22
AdrianGphantomcircuit: paper no, electronic cash is very trackable.17:22
gmaxwellAdrianG: yes, thats how you 'observe' ownership with bitcoin.   Just like your hope diamond in a box requires you to open a box (thus interacting with it), to be sure you really have it.17:22
AdrianGbut paper cash is miniscule vs electronic funds.17:22
sipalechuga_: and the payment request contains an encryption key, which the signer encrypts the whole payment message too, so if the data is not received, coins don't move17:22
AdrianGgmaxwell: hehe how very quantum17:22
gmaxwellSame model is used for chaum token digital cash: You only know the funds are yours when you ask the server to swap out a new token.17:23
kanzureyou don't prove to anyone that you never told others, that's not the point17:24
kanzurejust as others don't need to prove to you that others don't know their private key17:24

You can show them your security practices to increase confidence though.17:26

lechuga_ic17:27
gmaxwelllechuga_: basically the scheme needs some kind of dropbox for encrypted messages. It can have a hiererchy like, "send the request to all of the following places" one of which could be you directly if you're online or email.  Part of the design that we haven't considered much is that there may be a snazzy way to use bitcoin e.g. proof of owernship of coins to help make the mailbox DOS attack resis17:27

gmaxwellAdrianG: oh it absolutely has a cost to open the box: you suffer increased risk of damage or theft, you take the labor to actually go do it, have it observed, and also for the additional security required around the opening.17:33
Eliel_AdrianG: in practise, unless the imagined attacker has a reason to assume you'll be adding coins to the account, it makes no sense not to take the coins immediately if they manage to find a private key with access to bitcoins.17:34
sipalechuga_: right, you could separate them entirely; the encryption key may be a of a payment processor (which acts on the received money), which can be different from the issuing server (which may be even different from the actual key needed to spend the coins)17:35
lechuga_yup17:36

op_mulphantomcircuit: I’ve actually revised my feelings about BIP32 for any purpose other than split-key storage. op_mula feeling spread by bitcointalk and reddit is that you are able to happily import and export keys from any wallet, and those which don’t allow you to are somehow robbing you of your money (or control of it, whatever). it’s common practise to import keys into random bits of software without expecting a brick to fall on your head. people resent Bread Wallet for not having the “feature”, sadly.19:33

op_mulwith services like blockchain.info adding features allowing users to “search” by a particular BIP32 key (how, I don’t know, as there’s no real standard on the paths, maybe they support all of them), there’s a very high risk of users  unknowingly compromising either their security or their privacy.19:35

op_mulin a world where websites asking you to export master public keys and past them in is the norm, you can see how two “harmless” actions (export your public key to check your balance, export your old empty private keys for money (this is actually a thing today already)) lead to massive loss of money, maybe delayed by months or years, as pointed out.19:37
PRabop_mul: So is your complaint that wallets should actually advertize that they use bip 44, or that users should never share private keys (bip 32 master keys) between wallets?19:38

op_mulno, it all just comes down to the fact that users are trained to go "search" for their addresses (and master public keys are the same right) and export private keys whenever they feel like it. with HD wallets this is a lot, lot more dangerous, you don't just compromise yourself now but you compromise all future transactions too.20:10

gmaxwellthere are cases where non-hardned is very useful, but it's much more fragile, and for plenty of wallet applications hardened works fine.20:37
op_mulgmaxwell: yes, that's similar to the key exporting issue. from the users perspective not being able to "export" or "import" private keys is a deficiency rather than a security enhancement.
