Thanks. One other thing of note....I was running the build tagged v0.8.0 and upgraded to the most recent build,,which has the maker parameters stipulated in joinmarket.cfg. Couldnt figure out why my joinmarket.cfg didnt have the necessary fields to input my maker params. I went as far as looking into configure.py, which has the config file "built in" so I copied the [PAYJOIN] & [YIELDGENERATOR] 03:52 < davterra> sections to my config file....which worked. After all of that, it finally occured to me that after upgrading, I could have deleted my config file and ran joinmarket-qt to recreate the correct config version. 03:53 < davterra> I mention this because I assume there are other users that may encounter the same dilemma when upgrading to recent versions 04:07 -!- jungly [~jungly@host-79-23-186-173.retail.telecomitalia.it] has quit [Ping timeout: 258 seconds] 04:10 -!- belcher_ is now known as belcher 04:42 < waxwing> davterra, yes this has been a common slightly sticky point. 04:43 < waxwing> in one or two releases, we "strongly urged" people to: back up the existing joinmarket.cfg, run the script, then re-edit the user-specific values. 04:43 < waxwing> but as you can see that's a bit annoying. 04:43 < waxwing> another feature added in the new maker config is that every one of those settings can be set in a command line flag. 04:44 < waxwing> at least nowadays, when you start the maker, you see it print out its offer parameters (abs/rel, max/min etc). so if it's not doing what you expect you'll see it there. 04:45 < waxwing> (btw in the slight chance you didn't get it: if your joinmarket.cfg doesn't have the section, it uses the defaults in configure.py .. but it sounds like you already got that) 05:20 < davterra> Yep. For better or worse, I'm the type that just upgrades and doesn't "RTFM" unless something breaks. I think it just feeds my love for solving puzzles..... 05:35 -!- michaelfolkson [~michaelfo@2a03:b0c0:1:e0::23d:d001] has joined #joinmarket 05:50 < mryandao> 😀 06:13 < emzy> which version supports signet? Is #bitcoin still relevant? I'm not fond of the censorship but I guess they were getting too much noise 10:34 < rotwein> Anyway, I'll drop the question I have here since I see many of you that could answer it: What are the costs of taproot? (If none then I have a bridge to sell) 10:40 -!- jungly [~jungly@host-79-23-186-173.retail.telecomitalia.it] has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds] 10:46 < waxwing> rotwein, is it still relevant? shrug, i mean, it exists. not too active. 10:50 < waxwing> schnorr is really a strict improvement over ecdsa on most dimensions you could think of. taproot: well, it's a more complex construction; you can come up with cases where it'll cost more (specifically: taproot assumption not satisfied, and script is simple enough that you end up publishing slightly more bytes with the merkle root than you would otherwise) 10:51 < waxwing> musig style multisig is immensely better than current multisig in terms of N of N size and in terms of privacy and scale, but it does require extra interactivity to set up; in musig2 that is reduced to a much smaller cost. 10:52 < waxwing> (also, current multisig style scripts are still available for cases where you might prefer it) 11:01 < rotwein> waxwing: I remember #bitcoin-core being taken over by some guys at one point, hence the q about #bitcoin 11:02 -!- technonerd [~techno@gateway/tor-sasl/technonerd] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 11:03 -!- technonerd [~techno@gateway/tor-sasl/technonerd] has joined #joinmarket 11:03 < rotwein> my 2nd question is rather ideological than technical, we paid a hefty price for segwit - the increase in storage requirements leads to decreased decentralization 11:04 < rotwein> this might not be visible if you look at bitcoin-core but electrum's storage requirements almost doubled in the past year 11:05 < rotwein> let alone that it seems we're stuck at 10k open bitcoin node since segwit 11:10 -!- Marquis59Stanton [~Marquis59@static.57.1.216.95.clients.your-server.de] has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds] 11:35 < belcher> the thing with segwit is it allowed lightning network, which means there was all those transactions that never had to hit the chain at all, hundreds of thousands of such transactions per year by some estimates 11:37 < belcher> of course there is always pruning you could enable on bitcoin core, and electrum personal server is compatible with pruning too 11:48 < rotwein> I'm not denying we got some benefits, I doubt "hundreds of thousands" but it still has time to mature, as for prunning it is nice but dosen't scale. If I'm running core or eps for myself then storage isn't really the issue a 1tb hdd is cheap to come by, however when running them as a service IO becomes the bottleneck so running electrum 11:49 < rotwein> server w/o ssd is futile 11:53 < rotwein> I'm fairly sure taproot will increase cpu requirements but we're not that constrained in this aspect so we have some wiggle room 11:54 < waxwing> signature verification is better w/taproot (batch verifiable) 11:55 < waxwing> do read bip340,341, 342 btw to understand some details of what is added here 11:55 < waxwing> but with that, probably best to stop this discussion here; it's off topic and this place is logged so people can check joinmarket related stuff. 11:56 < belcher> yeah perhaps ##taproot-bip-review 11:56 < belcher> #bitcoin also does work, i am an op in there if needed 11:57 < rotwein> fair enough, thanks for your time, I 12:00 < rotwein> I'm catching up as fast as I can in order to make an informed decision on taproot, I will just leave you with this for now: no good thing comes with a bad 12:00 < rotwein> w/o 12:19 -!- luke-jr [~luke-jr@unaffiliated/luke-jr] has quit [Quit: ZNC - http://znc.sourceforge.net] 12:23 -!- luke-jr [~luke-jr@unaffiliated/luke-jr] has joined #joinmarket 13:10 -!- stoner19_ is now known as stoner19 13:24 -!- jungly [~jungly@host-79-23-186-173.retail.telecomitalia.it] has joined #joinmarket 14:06 -!- viasil [~nobody@95.174.67.172] has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds] 14:08 -!- viasil [~nobody@95.174.67.172] has joined #joinmarket 14:49 -!- jungly [~jungly@host-79-23-186-173.retail.telecomitalia.it] has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds] 15:00 -!- davterra [uid458765@gateway/web/irccloud.com/x-rvllqygwiqauowdp] has quit [Quit: Connection closed for inactivity] 15:23 -!- asoltys_ [~root@s207-81-214-2.bc.hsia.telus.net] has joined #joinmarket 15:36 -!- asoltys_ [~root@s207-81-214-2.bc.hsia.telus.net] has quit [Quit: Lost terminal] 15:40 -!- luke-jr [~luke-jr@unaffiliated/luke-jr] has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds] 15:41 -!- luke-jr [~luke-jr@unaffiliated/luke-jr] has joined #joinmarket 16:34 < emzy> fwiw my elecrum server runs on HDDs and has up to 3500 clients simultaneous connected.
