We touched the extremes a bit (330 bar Raptor). But even slightly more conservative approaches offer a great SLS replacement. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FIC9PvuWYAcBLiH.jpg (@Phrankensteyn) 00:47 < maaku> lsneff: a dozen more or less. i lost track tbh 00:48 < maaku> we tried to save money by not hiring a hardware engineer. what a stupid decision that was 03:38 -!- spaceangel [~spaceange@ip-78-102-216-202.net.upcbroadband.cz] has joined #hplusroadmap 03:59 -!- johest [~johest@user/johest] has quit [Ping timeout: 268 seconds] 06:06 < Jay_Dugger> Hello, everyone. 06:08 -!- Codaraxis [~Codaraxis@user/codaraxis] has joined #hplusroadmap 06:23 < darsie> . 07:39 -!- Malvolio [~Malvolio@user/malvolio] has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds] 08:21 < lsneff> I wonder what happened with the mechanical counterpressure spacesuit that an MIT lab was working on 08:21 < lsneff> Called the biosuit I think 08:21 < lsneff> I haven’t seen anything about it for a few years 08:23 -!- Malvolio [~Malvolio@user/malvolio] has joined #hplusroadmap 09:37 -!- Malvolio is now known as Guest6874 09:37 -!- Guest6874 [~Malvolio@user/malvolio] has quit [Killed (platinum.libera.chat (Nickname regained by services))] 09:37 -!- Malvolio [~Malvolio@user/malvolio] has joined #hplusroadmap 11:40 < darsie> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanical_counterpressure_suit 11:41 < darsie> I saw the bio suit in a video just now. 11:42 < darsie> https://youtu.be/03smqlKbGP0?t=4653 11:46 < lsneff> looks like that’s from two years ago 11:56 -!- Codaraxis_ [~Codaraxis@user/codaraxis] has joined #hplusroadmap 11:59 -!- Codaraxis [~Codaraxis@user/codaraxis] has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds] 12:04 -!- Codaraxis_ [~Codaraxis@user/codaraxis] has quit [Quit: Leaving] 13:42 < xaete[m]1> re: the diy hplc thing, idk how it would work for bigger molecules (protein size) but a DIY cyclograph (which works on rotary TLC) may be useful and low maintenance 14:58 -!- pasky_ [~pasky@nikam.ms.mff.cuni.cz] has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds] 15:00 < xaete[m]1> oh and also there exist prep and anal forms of hplc. prep hplc exists for early stage chem (lets say u have compound and u just wanna quickly sep the layers iirc) but it also exists for like. oligonucleotides and proteins where other forms of purification wont work 15:10 -!- pasky [~pasky@nikam.ms.mff.cuni.cz] has joined #hplusroadmap 15:11 -!- Croran [~Croran@71.231.214.173] has quit [Quit: leaving] 15:13 < streety> A fair point xaete[m]1 - I was thinking how for proteins a HPLC is often used on enzymatic digests, perhaps before a mass spec. As a destructive technique it's not a preparative tool. Small molecules don't have the same issue and might be useful. In the context of the proposals document, perhaps for oligonucleotides. 15:14 < xaete[m]1> yea so hplc w. a mass spec (lc/ms) is for analysis only, but hplc acn b used for prep scale too 15:14 < xaete[m]1> at the same time there is (imo) no such thing as a "cheap" hplc 15:15 < streety> The cyclograph is a technique I've not seen before. Looks interesting. 15:15 < xaete[m]1> (reason for that claim is basically that hplcs from what ive heard require lots of matinence and spare parts and solvent) 15:16 < streety> Another issue in the context of recombinant proteins - why not just introduce a tag to aid in purification? 15:16 < streety> high maintenance has definitely been my experience 15:16 < xaete[m]1> tbh i know nothina bt protein purification this is from a pure chem perspective 15:18 -!- darsie [~darsie@84-113-55-200.cable.dynamic.surfer.at] has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds] 15:20 < xaete[m]1> for a project that would be reasonably "cheap" and also be fairly useful -> id love to see a cheap 1-2T permanent magnet NMR 15:21 < xaete[m]1> from what i undesrtand most desktop nmrs are just a bunch of neodynium magnets and some carefully made PCBs in order to give the shim coils 15:21 < xaete[m]1> sadly dont know enough/have enough time to properly figure this out but yea 15:25 -!- Croran [~Croran@71.231.214.173] has joined #hplusroadmap 16:21 -!- spaceangel [~spaceange@ip-78-102-216-202.net.upcbroadband.cz] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 16:38 < lsneff> docl: Thinking about that electrochemical additive manufacturing technique again and I don't think the patent is that important to be honest 16:39 < lsneff> Still stuck on how to make the electrode array. I'm thinking a photoconductive layer on top of a transparent conductive layer (biased to some voltage) over a very bright LCD/OLED screen might do the trick. 16:41 < docl> yeah I think when you're just experimenting it's unlikely to be an issue really... and you're likely to make substantial changes by the time it's a product in any case 16:45 < docl> I can't think of a reason that wouldn't work. I wonder if there would be light pollution from the adjoining pixels to worry about? 16:47 < lsneff> That's a good thought. That might be an issue. 16:48 < lsneff> Photoconductive and conductive films are unfortunately not something I can just buy off the shelf 16:48 < lsneff> They're usually sputtered or deposited on 17:55 < lsneff> The light bouncing off the workpiece might cause unintended activations as well 18:07 -!- Jay_Dugger [~jwd@47-185-249-109.dlls.tx.frontiernet.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds] 18:08 -!- Malvolio [~Malvolio@user/malvolio] has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds] 18:09 -!- izo [~izoMoon@2a01:e0a:9f6:d0::4d19:33bd] has joined #hplusroadmap 18:19 -!- izo [~izoMoon@2a01:e0a:9f6:d0::4d19:33bd] has left #hplusroadmap [Leaving] 18:28 -!- Malvolio [~Malvolio@user/malvolio] has joined #hplusroadmap 20:01 -!- greenz1[m] [~greenz1@2001:470:69fc:105::ca1a] has quit [K-Lined] 20:01 -!- rndhouse[m] [~rndhousem@2001:470:69fc:105::1:1cfd] has quit [K-Lined] 20:01 -!- lsneff [~lsneff@2001:470:69fc:105::1eaf] has quit [K-Lined] 20:01 -!- xaete[m]1 [~xaetematr@2001:470:69fc:105::a438] has quit [K-Lined] 20:18 -!- Malvolio [~Malvolio@user/malvolio] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 20:25 -!- lsneff [~lsneff@2001:470:69fc:105::1eaf] has joined #hplusroadmap 20:25 -!- Malvolio [~Malvolio@user/malvolio] has joined #hplusroadmap 20:48 -!- lsneff [~lsneff@2001:470:69fc:105::1eaf] has quit [Quit: Client limit exceeded: 20000] 20:50 -!- greenz1[m] [~greenz1@2001:470:69fc:105::ca1a] has joined #hplusroadmap 20:50 -!- rndhouse[m] [~rndhousem@2001:470:69fc:105::1:1cfd] has joined #hplusroadmap 20:50 -!- xaete[m] [~xaetematr@2001:470:69fc:105::a438] has joined #hplusroadmap 23:30 -!- darsie [~darsie@84-113-55-200.cable.dynamic.surfer.at] has joined #hplusroadmap --- Log closed Sun Jan 30 00:00:44 2022
