Juul | hey kanzure, how's your life | 08:48 |
@kanzure | buying phones | 08:51 |
Juul | lots of them? | 08:51 |
@kanzure | yep.. time for upgrades | 08:51 |
@kanzure | bbl | 08:51 |

Juul | discussions between Jake Beal (BBN laboratories) and Autodesk about their non-openness and problems with "free for academic use" licensing | 09:15 |
@kanzure | heh | 09:15 |
@kanzure | i think those discussions would happen better with john walker | 09:15 |
@kanzure | rather than autodesk itself | 09:15 |
Juul | is he still in charge? | 09:16 |
Juul | doesn't look like it | 09:17 |
Juul | i'm sure he'd be an interesting guy to talk to though | 09:17 |
@kanzure | he is definitely not in charge | 09:18 |
Juul | Richard Kitney now arguing that synthetic biology is possible | 09:18 |
@kanzure | where are you? | 09:19 |
Juul | Synthetic Biology Open Language workshop | 09:19 |
Juul | i'm sure everyone here has heard these arguments before | 09:19 |
Juul | i'm not sure why it's called a language though | 09:20 |
Juul | so far it's just an XML data format | 09:20 |
Juul | i don't think that will change anytime soon | 09:21 |
@kanzure | libsbml? sbol? | 09:22 |
@kanzure | oh, it's probably sbol | 09:22 |
Juul | sbol yeah | 09:23 |
Juul | though we've been discussing a connection to SBML | 09:23 |
@kanzure | xml schema workshops... yikes | 09:23 |
Juul | heh. luckily we're not talking about the xml part of it, just creating a data model. | 09:24 |

@kanzure | has anyone figured out what a modern library should be? i.e. a copy of the internet archive? | 09:51 |

Juul | I wonder if the patch utility can handle stuff that's one long line | 11:18 |

Juul | kanzure, the library at my home university is just a set of desks, some with computers, all with power and internet | 11:56 |
-!- dbolser_ is now known as dbolser | 11:56 | |
Juul | the few remaining books are in the basement | 11:56 |
Juul | kanzure, i know the library of alexandria has done / is doing some interesting things | 11:57 |
Juul | like their stone spheres that encode important human works for very long term storage | 11:57 |
@kanzure | i want to go to a library and be able to request silly things like "A copy of all patents, please" and not get blank stares | 12:00 |
Juul | yeah | 12:00 |
Juul | i want librarians where i can walk up and say "hi! i have this idea, let me explain it to you <explains idea> do you know if anyone has done anything like that yet?" | 12:01 |
Juul | i wouldn't mind a redirect to another librarian | 12:01 |
Juul | gotta go, lunch! | 12:02 |

Lucas_ | Kanzure, are you still interested in the "transhumanist bootcamp" idea? | 12:06 |
superkuh | That last request seems a bit crazy. The amount of information that can be stored will probably always be limited by physical space (or at least surface area). Civilizations will use whatever capacity is available. Since local storage is limited by surface area, and surface area is something unlikely to be manufactured , any request for all public data will require as much surface area as the rest of the civilization devotes to it. An ind | 12:07 |
superkuh | ividual requesting those kinds of resources is out of order. | 12:07 |
augur | anyone know of any interesting experimental computer interfaces that people have been working on lately? | 12:17 |
Lucas_ | there is the "eye mouse" thing | 12:18 |
augur | ok | 12:19 |
@kanzure | augur: brainport? :P it's not recent though | 12:20 |
