Reposting here from the forums:
Good news: I'm just about to get a Bitcoin-Qt version 0.5 Release
Candidate 1 out, with a much-improved GUI.
Bad news: all the translations for the old wxWidgets Bitcoin are
obsolete, and the process for making translations is different.
Is anybody willing to write new translations? Here's what you'll need to know:
Three translations already exist: de nl and ru.
Translations are stored in ".ts" files in the src/qt/locale folder
The 'QT Linguist' tool can be used to create translations
... or maybe an online tool like Transifex could/should be used to
crowd-source the work
And is anybody willing to take the job of coordinating translation
efforts, figuring out if Transifex is a good tool to use, and writing
some documentation to make it easy for people to create and submit new
translations?

Please at least get Coinbaser merged for 0.5. It has had a lot of testing on
Eligius for months, a landslide of support for the new JSON-RPC method (as
requested), and I have even gone to the effort to document it. As I will no
longer be using bitcoind for Eligius soon, I have little incentive to
maintain/rebase coinbaser across a 0.6 development period.

FWIW, Gavin's IRC response more or less amounts to being unwilling to merge
this even though it was ready, tested, and even fulfilled his original request
for community support for the new JSON-RPC call, all long before he announced
the feature freeze on 0.5... hopefully it'll get merged to 0.6 git before it
needs a rebase. :/

To clarify, bitcoind will still serve the purpose of peering with external
nodes and picking out valid transactions to be accepted into blocks; it just
won't be involved in the primary operations of the pool.

So your custom software would handle incrementing the extraNonce,
recalculating the merkle tree/root, and so on?

Yes, does that already. Hard part right now is implementing a stateless TCP/IP
"stack" so it can ignore DDoS sanely.

I have exported all .ts to transifex.

I'm now trying to figure out how to use it but it looks like
tx pull && git add src/qt/locale/* && git commit src/qt/locale/ && git push
will be all that's needed to push translation updates from transifex to
github.

Actually no, the same string may have to be translated in different ways
depending on the context they appear in. That sometimes happens for italian,
and I'm sure it happens in other cases too. Not sure whether this is the
cause for duplicate strings for now, but it might.

Indeed. It could make sense. That's the reason why Qt distinguishes strings
based on context as well as content.
But it could also be nonsense. Can you be more specific as to which strings?

Three quick examples of duplicated strings. There are many more. Some of
the smaller ones may make sense to have duplicated several times in
english as their translated versions may differ in other languages. But
with these below I don't see the point.
Twice, with a small difference (<b> vs. none):

It seems that somehow strings from the old Wx UI had ended up in
bitcoinstrings.cpp. I re-ran the string extraction script and the duplicated
messaged should be gone.
