09:43 < sipa> i think one way of thinking about them is as a further reduced version of xpubs; for some operations (bip32) you need the full xpub, but for many it's ok not to have the chaincode; similarly for many operations (ecdsa, key tweaking) you need the pubkey, but for some (schnorr) the x-only pubkey suffices
