09:01 < kanzure> .wik inventor's paradox
09:01 < yoleaux> "The inventor's paradox is a phenomenon that occurs in seeking a solution to a given problem. Instead of solving a specific type of problem, which would seem intuitively easier, it can be easier to solve a more general problem, which covers the specifics of the sought after solution." — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inventor%27s_paradox
09:01 < kanzure> "in other words, to solve what one desires to solve, one may have to solve more than that in order to get a properly working flow of information"

10:16 < abetusk> re: inventors paradox. This happens in math and computer science a lot. I think one of the reasons is that standard tools are tried for the specific problems when new ideas are needed. A theory is developed that has a key idea that solves a broader more general problem of which the task is one specific sub type.
10:20 < TMA> the main reason it works in math/cs is by making a variable from one of the constants enables to dissect the problem along another axis, which might be easier to do

10:34 < abetusk> no, sometimes the ideas are deeper and connect two areas that didn't have an obvious relation. Polynomial factorization via lattice reduction, for example. Connecting questions of geometry and linear algebra to a question of algebraic number theory

12:25 < TMA> that's translation to another domain. sidestepping the problem is a valuable and powerfull tool too, but I think it is not covered by the inventor's paradox category
12:37 < abetusk> In many cases it's solving a broader problem by encompassing other domains

13:50 < nmz787> .tell chris_99 you can also run without a window, but then you risk dust and moisture
13:50 < yoleaux> nmz787: I'll pass your message to chris_99.
13:51 < chris_99> hey nmz787
13:51 < yoleaux> 21:50Z <nmz787> chris_99: the window on the CCD is the limiting factor, to get below the glass absorbtion, you either need to coat it with a fluorophore, or swap the glass with quartz
13:51 < yoleaux> 21:50Z <nmz787> chris_99: you can also run without a window, but then you risk dust and moisture
13:51 < chris_99> oh cheers that's intresting
13:52 < chris_99> i just found something kind of cool - the patent for the scio (which i've just gotten a refund for heh) patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/pdfs/US20140320858.pdf
13:52 < nmz787> oh yeah, I was trying to remember that recently to show how horrible they were
13:52 < nmz787> (the name)
13:53 < chris_99> heh, i'm just tring to understand the patent
13:59 < nmz787> chris_99: not much new, just integration it seems
13:59 < chris_99> is the microlens idea new
13:59 < nmz787> probably the only thing that might be novel is 'the cloud'
14:00 < nmz787> sending the data to be processed on the cloud
14:00 < nmz787> integrated optics are done all the time
14:00 < nmz787> the raman 'gun' manufacturers have probably done exactly that
14:01 < nmz787> or if they haven't, have it in their back pockets
14:01 < nmz787> only I guess they give the users some DRM-ed database locally
14:01 < nmz787> rather than keeping their DB in the cloud
14:02 < nmz787> microlense is kindof a misleading remark I think, as it says it doesn't use 'dispersive' optics... so I take that to me it's all refractive (i.e. gratings and pinholes, etc)
14:03 < nmz787> and I'm sure some of their catch-all claims are novel in terms of patenting, but nothing novel in terms of what smart people would be expecting...
14:03 < nmz787> like "compact spectrometer system is incorporated into a refrigerator."
14:03 < nmz787> duh
14:04 < chris_99> hehe
14:04 < nmz787> they don't have 'spectrometer in the toilet'... my claim is saved!
14:05 < nmz787> ttyl
14:05 < chris_99> toodles
14:05 * nmz787 goes to cut wood for a workbench
14:05 < chris_99> nice :)

19:21 < drethelin> kanzure: yeah I don't unerstand why people are so obsessed with low-bandwidth voice communication
19:24 < kanzure> there might be one or two situations where voice is okay, but the vast majority of the cases should not default to voice
19:24 < kanzure> and they certainly should not default to face relay
19:30 < drethelin> voice has value for non-strangers
19:31 < drethelin> you can convey information really quickly with people you know or work with
19:31 < drethelin> but for impersonal stuff like lectures voice is really slow

19:33 < kanzure> anders sandberg is surprisingly anti-transhumanist here "One take would be that there really is a level of persuasion that is unacceptable because it allows them to exert will on us reliably enough that our will becomes overruled. Another take would be that persuasion through the usual channels - good arguments, winning ways, a nice face - is something we understand and can handle using our normal mental firewalls, while other methods - ...
19:33 < kanzure> ... subliminal signals, pheromones - might circumvent our firewalls and hence be unacceptable.
19:33 < kanzure> "
19:34 < kanzure> who the shit cares whether that's bad? if it's happening, you can't just tell them "you're being a meanie butthead, so therefore you're not really happening". that's the dumbest strategy i've heard from him besides "work with nick bostrom".
19:35 < drethelin> what's so dumb about bostrom
19:35 < kanzure> well, the primary wrong that he has committed in his life is that he failed to point anders back on a path of righteous badassery
19:35 < kanzure> second, for as much as he might seem transhumanist, his primary motivation seems to be the typical drugery of academic bullsiht
19:36 < kanzure> writing these things down is important but you don't need to be in academia to do that
19:36 < kanzure> most of his ethics articles are these weirdo "ask for permission now, but never for forgiveness" philosophy that makes him ineffective at achieving any of these goals
19:37 < kanzure> he is far too eager to appease the bioethics people at the expense of other work
19:38 < kanzure> he doesn't spend enough time on biology (his "embryo selection" article is evidence of this)
19:38 < kanzure> i would call a truce if he kicks anders out of the nest and back into the world
19:41 < kanzure> george church is a way more pragmatic academic transhumanist than nick bostrom
19:42 < kanzure> i'm allowed to say that now that this channel is no longer sponsored by his billion-dollar lab hedge fund
20:05 < drethelin> hah
