05:50 < nsh> --
05:50 < nsh> The technology is based on a piece of synthetic DNA – an “aptamer” – which targets and binds with a human protein called nucleolin. Early tests show that this aptamer may stop viruses, including novel coronavirus, from “hijacking” nucleolin to replicate inside the body.
05:50 < nsh> UofL is seeking to fast-track development, including application to the Food and Drug Administration for approval to start treating patients seriously affected with COVID-19.
05:50 < nsh> The aptamer was discovered by UofL’s Paula Bates, John Trent and Don Miller, who have applied it in a variety of ways, most notably as a potential therapeutic drug against multiple types of cancer. With the current global pandemic of coronavirus and the COVID-19 disease it causes, Bates partnered with fellow researcher Kenneth Palmer to apply the technology once again.

11:07 < fenn> why isn't it more common to store food in liquid nitrogen
11:07 < fenn> this whole buying food all the time thing is totally bullshit

11:32 < fltrz> fenn, I asked multiple times about the shortest routes to synthesize amino acids, preferably electrically powered.... seems like there was a startup that fed bacteria / algae / microbes hydrogen gas and CO2 to make protein was enlisted by ESA or some such IIRC

12:39 < kanzure> would any of y'all have a question for a raman spectrometry person from metrohm in wyoming?

13:08 < fltrz> can we image collisions of air molecules with a surface? if those collisions in different parts of field of view, can it achieve super resolution? i.e. instead of active nuetral molecule beam imaging, passive air collision imaging?
13:08 < fltrz> *if those collisions *are uncorrelated* in diff...
13:23 < fenn> ask him about free libre databases of raman shifts for organic molecules
13:23 < fenn> spectra*
13:27 < fenn> basically i want to zap stuff with a homemade spectrometer and have my phone tell me what it is, but there's no available database to compare my data to
13:28 < kanzure> yeah i can ask that
13:32 < fenn> i just don't understand why people insist on this sort of crap: "Access to this database is free of charge. However we request visitors to our database not to download more than 50 spectra and/or compound information in one day. All accesses are recorded. It is prohibited that you use any information of SDBS for profit-making or commercial use"
13:32 < fenn> oh noes that's like 2MB of data

16:19 < fltrz> fenn, yeah thats just regulatory capture "in the name of science", really governments should condition funding black / white on datasets, and other deliverables being in the public domain.
16:21 < fltrz> oh perhaps ask if there are raman spectrometer setups that do away with the expensive notch filter for the laser line, perhaps somehow by destructive interference with the original laser beam?
16:21 < fltrz> without the expensive notch filter raman spectrometers would be dirt cheap

16:56 < fenn> the ramanpi uses a highpass and a lowpass
16:57 < fenn> $12 and $16 on ebay supposedly
16:59 < fenn> the rest of the project could use some work
