04:52 < adlai> thank you for sharing your story robertmcdougal_73197
04:53 < adlai> I'm always impressed by how stressed medical personnel are. there could have been a stress/sleep deprivation factor contributing to the surgeon misinterpreting the CT scan by accident rather than malice
04:55 < adlai> obviously it is still malpractice, although I think this kind of error will always worry me; humans get tired, machine learning systems get overfit, and in most cases of error, all an investigation could do is demand financial compensation. there's rarely any deep lesson in terms of why the error happened.
05:01 < L29Ah> one could've spent the hours before the surgery to send the CT scan results to other doctors and get their opinion
05:42 < hprmbridge> Eli> In a high deductible low cost healthcare market, no one would get charged for a doctors mistake and you would receive some sort of compensation for this. But Medicare probably not only paid him, but encouraged him to spend less time analyzing the scans due to financial pressures. Incentives between doctors and patients are unaligned.
05:46 < hprmbridge> Eli> In my mental model this is not completely making sense to me. If the strain you need has disappeared from your microbiome then how can it come back?

08:19 < superkuh> Seems like an odd choice of use for a jet engine. By halfway through (30 of 65km) atmospheric pressure would be ~1% of start with 35 more km to go.
08:25 < L29Ah> still it could give some good impulse while in atmosphere
08:25 < L29Ah> and then separate and land for reuse
08:25 < superkuh> Sounds complex.
08:27 < L29Ah> five years ago reusing boosters sounded complex
08:31 < superkuh> Having two things fly back instead of 1 is significantly greater complexity.
08:32 < superkuh> Jet engines cannot be used to complete the first stage boost. That means two systems. Two system is worse than 1 system. Especially if they both need to detach.
08:32 < superkuh> It is a silly use case suggestion for a jet engine.
08:32 < L29Ah> indeed https://i.ytimg.com/vi/PZBPVds4Y4M/hqdefault.jpg
08:33 < superkuh> I see 1 system.
08:33 < superkuh> Rockets.
08:33 * L29Ah throws systems at superkuh
08:33 < superkuh> To use jet engines in that scenario would require 4 discrete machines.
08:33 < superkuh> Instead of 2.

13:22 < fenn> let's just skip to global totalitarian AI hegemony

13:26 < fenn> since i'm a cell structure with the capacity to develop and give rise to a born human being, can i be classified as an embryo and considered alive if cryo-preserved?
13:28 < hprmbridge> kanzure> let's campaign for embryos to be included on the census. It's a long-term plan, but a single warehouse full of freezers would be enough to influence congressional redistricting

23:21 < hprmbridge> robertmcdougal_73197> Absolutely not. He knew there was no emergency. He only said that when talking to me in order to trick me. In his pre-op notes he wrote down completely elective reasons, falsely stated that he explained elective reasons, and falsely stated that I agreed to those elective reasons. He tried to put words in my mouth. He very intentionally lied about our conversation immediately afterwards.
