17-Nov-18 10:08 PM Hello, and welcome to The Vacuum Hackers Discord! We're a group of enthusiasts, hobbyists, students & professionals in the high-vacuum and related technology spaces. (SEMs, microfabrication, nuclear, plasma, & particle physics -- you name it!). This is a community space for like-minded folks to congregate and collaborate. Rules 1. Be civil and respectful. We're all friends here, and would like to keep it that way. Goofing around is fine, and heated debates happen, but don't be a jerk. Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and any other bigotry will not be tolerated. 2. Keep it SFW. We want this to be a place that anyone and everyone can be a part of. Some folks might be slacking offhanging out while at work. Younger engineers are present. Be mindful of what you post and take the lewds elsewhere. Adult language/cussing is not permitted and will be automatically removed by our bot. 3. Don't snipe auctions. We can't enforce this, so it's on the honor system, but: Many of us are students or hobbyists working on constrained budgets, and may post links to active sales or auctions in hopes of gathering information. Unless it was posted in #swap-meet, assume it is already spoken for. Finally, moderators have the final say in all disputes. Access is a privilege, not a right. 17-Nov-18 10:08 PM Pinned a message. 17-Nov-18 10:08 PM Pinned a message. 11-Feb-20 08:28 PM On handling regulated substances or devices: Please know what is and is not legal in your local jurisdiction. In the US this means paying attention to what your state office of radiation health and safety has to say about something (usually x-ray devices and toxic/radioactive materials), what the NRC has to say (usually relating to radiative sources and their use/licensing requirements), and the FDA (usually regulations surrounding lasers). The patch work of overlapping regulations and authorities can be complicated sometimes, with different organizations at different levels of government all having their own requirements. If you are not in the USA there is still a very good chance that there are regulatory authorities in your country as well. Find out who they are, find out what they have to say, and then do what they say. We all want to have fun with these things and do interesting projects with them, but at the same time it is our responsibility and a requirement of being a part of this server that you do so safely and in a manner consistent with the pertinent regulations. None of us want to have to give a deposition about you. 06-Dec-20 09:14 PM When designing your projects, take a moment to consider the hazards you are generating not just for yourself, but for the people that share your space or who might be impacted by your work down the road. Then work on mitigating those hazards by implementing controls following the hierarchy laid out here. As a general rule, if the only control you have for your work is PPE, you're doing it wrong. You're depending on the last line of defense to save you. 06-Dec-20 09:14 PM Vacuum%20Hackers%20-%20Text%20Channels%20-%20welcome%20%5B513552157601955840%5D.html_Files/HierarchyControls-975FD.png
