kanzure14:22 <+nsh> imagine you have a elaboration of symmetries to more complex compounded geometrical entities which represent the states of being at the interfaces between subsystems with conservation laws14:25
kanzure14:22 <+nsh> and then you appreciate something like the generalized stokes theorem allows you to relate a n-dimensional integral or differential form with an n-1 dimensional one14:25
kanzure14:23 <+nsh> and this establishes the hierarchy of complexity14:25
kanzure14:23 <+nsh> that's asserted is that through a simple low-degree iteration of this process you can establish the circuit laws as the consequence of maxwell's equations in conjunction with boundary conditions14:25

xentracnmz787_i: have you tried Antimony?  I don't have a good sense for whether it's a usable tool or not15:45
xentracI'm not having a lot of luck on figuring out how you could use BRL-CAD to do design for laser-cutter fabrication yet15:46
nmz787_ibuild whatever you want in 3D, then export to 2D or gcode15:50
nmz787_ithere are BRLCAD g-code dumpers15:50
nmz787_ior exporters15:50
nmz787_ifor some laser cutters a single layer/pass might be fine to cut through... but for my very weak laser (for cutting), it would take multiple passes at different Z depths, so in that case having a 3D model makes it possible to incorporate a slicer into the g-code output15:53
nmz787_imaybe I misworded the end of that a bit, but I hope you get what I mean15:53
xentracyeah, I see what you mean15:55
xentracthe kind of designs I'm thinking about are pretty different from what you're talking about, though15:57
delinquentmeI have this part: http://imgur.com/ATVOjHQ  where the array of 10 holes in the center are mounts for neodynium magnets.  In parallel to the face of this part aka " the base " floats a metal plate15:59
delinquentmethe entire assembly can be seen here: http://imgur.com/IB9xT5t16:00
delinquentmeI need to know ... the best polar-orientation of the magnets on the base16:00
delinquentmeto eddy current dampen the floating metal plate16:00
delinquentmethe circles are suspended by bungees within the triangular / hexagonal structure16:01
delinquentmeand the circular plates swing as pendulums -- thats what im trying to dampen16:01
delinquentmeplz advise .16:01

xentracnmz787_i: I'm talking about designs like https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:56655 and https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3390, which are not going to come out of a "design using CSG and then run through a generic slicer" kind of workflow16:02
xentracyou can design them in 2D using parametric tools like OpenSCAD of course16:04
xentracunassembled16:05
xentracbut that's not really different from just writing raw PostScript16:05
xentraca really simple example is http://boxmaker.connectionlab.org/16:23
streetydelinquentme: I don't think I can advise, but I'm curious about what that device is for16:32
xentracnmz787_i: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJ9AYGN4Mes is something like what I'm thinking of, but it doesn't incorporate flexures or custom joint types, and it's proprietary16:42

nmz787_ixentrac: it looks like you'd need to write some sort of converter, that would take your desired part designed in some format (BRLCAD, markup, etc) and then based on heuristics/rules figure out what shapes you converted into the laser-cut bent-wood.16:50
nmz787_ibut if you could mentally do that conversion, to this format, then you can certainly enter this into CSG (which is not all BRLCAD supports) http://thingiverse-production-new.s3.amazonaws.com/renders/b8/73/7d/c0/61/Unbenannt_preview_featured.jpg16:51

abetusk40W co2 lasers are now under $400 on ebay16:57
xentracsounds similar to here: http://articulo.mercadolibre.com.ar/MLA-586434579-tubo-laser-co2-50w-maquina-corte-y-grabado-1000x50mm-_JM is a 50W CO₂ laser tube for AR$7000, which is currently US$470 or so17:12

streetyscale the controller and cooling up 10x and that $400 price tag starts to look like the tip of a rather large iceberg19:57
abetuskI've never owned a laser cutter so I don't know what's involved, but the $400 laser cutter said it had cooling, fan and water pump.  A smootheboard will run you about $100 for 3-axis20:06
